In addition to providing a comfortable sauna experience, effective ventilation helps keep the sauna fresh and ensures that excess moisture is removed. Adequate ventilation is essential in every sauna. While the ventilation design differs depending on whether the sauna is heated by an electric or wood-burning stove, sufficient air exchange is equally important in both cases.
The optimal location for a fresh air valve is approximately 40–50 cm above the top of the sauna heater stones, positioned to the side of the heater. When installed at this height, the incoming air is warmed by the rising heat from the heater before it circulates throughout the sauna. A fresh air valve should not be installed near floor level, as this can make the floor uncomfortably cold and, particularly during winter, increase heating demand in saunas with underfloor heating.
Sauna ventilation should operate continuously to provide an adequate supply of fresh air during use and to remove moisture efficiently after bathing. If the air is not exchanged sufficiently, the sauna is likely to develop a stale or musty smell between sauna sessions.
